Working For You.

Whilst we can absolutely move your freight to anywhere in Australia, or indeed the world, naturally some places are easier to get to than others. One of the major benefits of partnering with Applied Logistics is that we have a passion for delivering to unusual places. In that spirit, if you have some freight to move to somewhere not marked on our map above, let us know and we promise that we will get you an extra special rate!

Applied Logistics is your first choice when it comes to mission critical air freight services. We have access to Virgin Australia, Qantas, Jetstar, Air North, Rex and Toll aircraft, meaning that you know that we will be able to get your critical freight to where it’s needed as fast as possible.

Domestic Air Services differ from International due to the size of aircraft used. Both Virgin Australia and Qantas operate wide body A330 aircraft to and from Perth. This allows us to lodge much larger and heavier freight on these services. Jetstar’s A320 services are also containerised, meaning that we can also lodge larger and heavier freight, so long as it fits in the container.

The 717, 737, ATR, Bombardier, Embraer and Fokker services operated by Qantas and Virgin Australia have greater restrictions due to manual handling and aircraft size.

Containers are also available in various formats which are ideal for loose items or consolidated loads.

Rail has long been a cornerstone of Applied Logistic’s suite of services. We love that rail is economical, efficient and environmentally responsible. Rail is also secure, smooth and reliable.

Rail is best suited to general freight through consolidators (or forwarders) or full loads over longer distances.

Linehaul rail operators (such as Aurizon) only accept loaded shipping containers. Applied Logistics is able to provide you with a full service, including road cartage and both standard and specialised shipping containers to handle your freight.

We have direct access to Aurizon, Pacific National, SCT, GWA and TasRail services, as well as through forwarders such as Toll, Sadleirs, NTFS, K&S Group and Rand Transport.

Call us to discuss how we can utilise rail to make your supply chain more efficient and effective today!

Rail has certain limitations when it comes to large items. Typically, we are limited to 13.7m in length, 2.5m in width and 2.6m in height – although this does depend on a lot of factors. Typically rail is inefficient for moving cars and small items.

Coastal Shipping.

Developement of the interstate railway network and highways has contributed to the demise of coastal shipping in Australia. However, options are still available where it is essential, or where there is sufficient demand.

Coastal shipping should be considered when you have constant flows of freight and transit time is of a lesser concern. Heavy freight also benefits from containerised coastal shipping, because the shipping line doesn’t charge extra for weight.

We recommend coastal shipping for the movement of heavy or large machinery – although, forward planning will help reduce the overall transit time.

Each lane has a different set of solutions available. LCL, Break Bulk, RORO and containers are available on all services to remote communities and across the Bass Strait.

For customers who have heavy freight, or consistent freight requirements, we have access to international container ships operating under licence on the below lanes:

  • East Coast > Perth
  • Melbourne > Sydney > Brisbane
  • MEL > SYD > BNE > Townsville during peak periods
  • MEL > Hobart > SYD
  • ADL / BNE / FRE / MEL / SYD > Darwin via Singapore as domestic cargo

RORO is available from Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Fremantle, Melbourne, Port Kembla, Tasmania and Townsville,

For Bass Strait (Tasmania), Darwin and Far North Queensland communities, we have a direct relationship with Toll Shipping, SeaRoad and Sea Swift.

To other transport companies, it is just freight. To us, it is the product of your hard work; your skill, expertise; your reputation. As your Freight Forwarder of choice, we mix and match carriers, modes and services to treat your product with the respect, attention to detail and communication that you deserve.

This comes from years of experience in managing freight, from building relationships with carriers to understanding what you need from us as your partner.

We offer a full range of services, from Economy, General, Express through to Premium.

Our Economy service is favoured by most customers for it’s cost effectiveness, but it also comes with full respect for your freight – it’s just that the transit time is a little bit more vague. We might only have a couple of services per week, or your freight might take an extra couple of days to be delivered – which is perfectly fine most of the time.

The difference with Applied Logistics is that we can use a different service for each shipment. Often, we can reduce the transit time of freight when it’s already in motion. This might be through upgrading the service with the carrier, switching carriers at a transit point, or arranging a direct delivery upon arrival.

How Applied Logistics supports Antarctic research voyages

How Applied Logistics supports Antarctic research voyages

Applied Logistics assists both the University of Technology Sydney and Macquarie University with deployments for marine research projects. These projects occur onboard CSIRO’s RV Investigator, which is also known as Australia’s Marine National Facility.

Space restrictions at University locations means that we are unable to use a traditional semi trailer based side loader. To overcome these restrictions, we partner with a local container transport company that has a rigid side loader truck.

UTS previously used a crane truck for this work, but health and safety was a factor in selecting Applied Logistics’ solution. Not only was this option safer, but it also provided increased protection for the scientific equipment inside the lab.

Due to the nature of mobilising for such voyages, we provide the research team with certainty that the container is available locally well ahead of deadline. We also provide certainty to the vessel operations team that the equipment will be dropped off and collected at the right time. This can be particularly complex as underhook operations are impacted by various factors.

The most fascinating voyage we have been part of was the Sabrina Seafloor Survey. In January 2017, the RV Investigator set sail for Antarctica on a voyage lasting 51 days. You can read about that here.

This mission involved collecting core samples and sea floor sediment samples. These samples needed to be treated with Gamma Irradiation in Brisbane as part of their import permit to Australia.

We were responsible for the underbond transportation of this material, under a Quaranitne Direction from Hobart to Brisbane for treatment. The material required special handling at 4 degrees Celsius. Once processed, we then arranged to return these to Canberra for analysis, study and preservation for future projects.

You can read more about this project on the below websites:

Tasmanian Logistical Solutions

Tasmanian Logistical Solutions

Tasmania is a very special part of Australia. 12 hours by sea south of Melbourne lie the gateways of Burnie and Devonport. Often when people think of Tasmania, memories of pinot noir; cheese; beef, lamb; tourism and long summer evenings overcome the senses.

Whilst Tasmania’s international exports were recently valued at $3.436 billion for the year ending February 2018, this doesn’t include exports to mainland Australia.

Tasmania’s population sits around 520,000 – about 2.5 times smaller than the City of Brisbane.

Applied Logistics’ experience in Tasmania:

Applied Logistics’ strong relationships in Tasmania allows us to support our clients moving to or from Tasmania; conduct business in Tasmania and, interestingly, undertake research trips.

Several universities from the mainland; the CSIRO and Geoscience Australia have called on Applied Logistics’ logistical support for their research voyages on the RV Investigator from Hobart. This includes managing the movement of scientific equipment and an offshore containerised laboratory.

We’ve also been responsible for the transportation of underbond transport of chilled sediment samples from Hobart to Brisbane for quarantine treatment. These samples were taken from the sea floor near Antarctica and will assist with climate research. We’ve then arranged to return these to Canberra for analysis and study. If you want to hear more about this project, read our article “How Applied Logistics supports Antarctic research voyages

We’ve arranged all types of freight into and out of all parts of Tasmania. Containers; vehicles; general freight; express freight; air freight; parcels; refrigerated freight and timber. We have accounts with Toll ANL Shipping and TasRail, and access to the new international shipping lines calling in Bell Bay and Hobart.

Services frequencies and transit times across the Bass Strait

Four RORO cargo ships operate between Melbourne and the Tasmania ports of Burnie and Devonport, alongside the two Spirit of Tasmania vessels. These operate alternate north and southbound sailings. Departure is Monday – Saturday evenings with the journey taking 12 hours. All types of cargo are accepted, although there are restrictions on some types as well as Quarantine clearance processes.

This means that express freight ex Melbourne can arrive next day into any location in Tasmania, or two days from Sydney and three days from Brisbane. Obviously these timeframes are tight – with freight needing to be collected before lunch. General and economy freight options typically take 3-4 days from Melbourne and a week from Sydney and Brisbane.

TasRail operate trains direct from the wharf in Burnie, with overnight departures to Hobart for containers running Monday to Saturday.

How can we help you?

Regardless of what type of logistical challenge you face, we are passionate about helping you succeed. Big or small; one off jobs or ongoing work, we have the right solution for you. If you have work on in Tasmania, get in touch – we can talk you through all of the options and provide professional advice on logistical risk management.

We are here to help, so don’t leave it to chance!

Business freight – how do you get the best value?

Business freight – how do you get the best value?

In today’s economy every dollar matters. Potential customers are seeking quotes from an increasing number of potential suppliers. Due to employees having more time spare, they are becoming more organised. This is enabling them to consider purchasing from further afield than they have in the past.

This is good news for many businesses – suddenly there are a whole lot more potential customers on the other side of the country that are seeking them out in the hope that they can reduce their costs.

The problem for many of these potential suppliers is that they don’t have economical transport options to all locations. Many national carriers will only offer rates on certain lanes – between city pairs that you have a trading history. This means if you send reasonable quantities of freight from Melbourne to Perth, Sydney and Brisbane, but not Townsville, you will pay “schedule rates”. Schedule rates could be two to three times more than the market rate…

What all of this means for many small to medium sized businesses is that it is hard to compete when you are approached by potential customers in new locations. This isn’t just a problem when they require a price for your products delivered, but also if your potential customer doesn’t have good transport rates from your location to theirs.

Our recommendation is when quoting on these jobs, include a separate freight component. Your customer need not feel obliged to accept your freight option, but it might make the difference between a confirmed order and just a quote.

For all straight forward quote requests, you can expect a response within one hour. Our standard economy service provides very sharp rates by taking advantage of our industry knowledge, efficient transport networks and strict management of costs.

When you partner with Applied Logistics, you are teaming with a professional freight forwarder who is able to cover all of the bases. Whilst our economy option benefits from the luxury of flexibility in terms of transit time, we also have good rates available on general and express shipments when your customer requires your product quickly.

The great news is that we can offer a premium freight solution if the order is urgent. For a premium on our express rates, we are able to ensure that we do everything Loading Semi Trailerwithin our power to ensure that your goods travel as quickly as is physically possible. We can get your freight collected after cut off. We can get your freight loaded onto a truck that is already full. We can ensure that the truck to your destination doesn’t leave until your freight is loaded, we can ensure that if the truck is late into your destination, your freight will still be delivered. We can even arrange for a dedicated vehicle to deliver your freight metro or regional locations. You haven’t experienced customer service until you have taken advantage of our premium freight solution!

The other brilliant solution that we offer is air freight. This service is particularly good for when you have small, but urgent orders, or your customer needs replacement parts or consumables to keep their business running. We can offer next flight and sameday services, as well as overnight services. By being able to assist your clients in their time of need, you are giving them reasons to be loyal.

Feel free to call and discuss with us about how partnering with us could resolve barriers to growth in your business.
